GREAT WHALES EXPEDITION
JANUARY 22-29 2011

On this post-conference voyage, we will explore
the wonderful wilds of Baja California -- a desert paradise
and home to the California gray whales! You will fly
Tucson to Los Angeles, and then to La Paz in Baja California.
For several days, we will explore one of the great whale
habitats in the world -- Bahia Magdalena -- on board
the National Geographic Sea Bird and in zodiacs. Discover
mangrove forests by kayak, and watch magnificent frigate
birds, pelicans, terns, great blue herons, ibis, and
more, as you marvel at the activity of the California
gray whales. Continue to the Gorda Banks seamount to
look for humpback whales, as well as dolphins. Snorkel
at Isla Espiritu Santo, and explore the Southern Sea
of Cortez, one of the great wildlife and marine sanctuaries
in the Americas. There is outstanding naturalist program
on board ship.

BAJA GREAT WHALES ITINERARY IN BRIEF
Sat Jan 22 TUCSON TO LOS ANGELES & LA PAZ,
BAJA CALIFORNIA
Fly from Tucson to Los Angeles, where you will board
the group flight to La Paz.
Transfer to San Carlos on the northern end of Magdalena
Bay on the Pacific side of Baja.
Board the National Geographic Sea Bird and
introduction to the ship.
Welcome dinner. (D)
Sun-Tues Jan 23-25 MAGDALENA BAY
Meals on board ship.
For 3 days, we will explore this sanctuary for the California
Gray Whales.
Look for whales from the ship and up close from zodiacs.
Discover dense mangroves by kayak.
Watch for magnificent frigate birds, great blue herons,
terns, ibis, and willets.
Enjoy the on-board lecture program and excursions with
the ship’s naturalists. (B,L,D)
Wed
Jan 26 LOS CABOS & GORDA BANKS
Meals on board ship.
Cruise past Friars Rocks at Land’s End and visit
the historic town center of San Jose del Cabo.
Afternoon visit to the Gorda Banks seamount, a gathering
place for whales. Look for humpbacks, dolphins and other
sea life. (B,L,D)
Thurs Jan 27 ISLES LOS ISLOTES & ESPIRITU
SANTO
Meals on board ship.
At Los Islotes, snorkel and swim with curious sea lions.
In the afternoon, swim, kayak, or hike at Espiritu Santo.
Enjoy the brown pelicans, gulls and boobies that soar
overhead.
Have a relaxing beach BBQ this evening, with a campfire
and star-filled sky.

Fri Jan 28 EXPLORING THE SEA OF CORTEZ
Meals on board ship.
Search for whales among the islands of the southern
Sea of Cortez.
Look for blue whales and common and bottlenose dolphins.
Walk among the huge cacti on Isla San Jose or Isla Santa
Catalina.
Swim or snorkel with king angelfish, butterfly fish,
damselfish, and parrotfish. (B,L,D)
Sat Jan 29 LA PAZ - LOS ANGELES - HOME
Breakfast on board ship.
Disembark and transfer to the airport for our flight
to Los Angeles.
Take connecting flights home. (B)
Baja Great Whales Fee: Approx. $4,995 per person in
