SOUTH AFRICA BY SEA
Aboard
the All-Suite, 114-Guest Corinthian II
March 19 - April 3, 2009
South
Africa is as wildly beautiful as anywhere in the world.
It is a country at once inconceivably old and extremely
young; not even 20 years have passed since the fall
of apartheid and the beginning of the country’s
exciting renaissance. Next March, it is our pleasure
to invite you on a cruise along the dramatic coast of
this dynamic country.
Everything
about this part of South Africa is diverse and vibrant.
The ever-changing coastal landscape is magnificent,
consisting of desolate karoo grass flats, towering cliffs,
lush forests, bright wildflowers, mountains and river
valleys. The inhabitants are diverse, as well. In the
course of the spice trade, the coastal migration routes
were settled by various peoples: Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho
tribes; European settlers; Indians; and others. Today’s
architecture, ranging from thatched roof huts to Durban
skyscrapers, reflects this mix.
Our voyage begins in South Africa’s oldest city,
Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world,
with its stunning combination of mountains and coast.
After exploring Stellenbosch’s wine country, with
its exquisite vineyards and whitewashed Dutch farmhouses,
and the Cape Peninsula, whose striking cliffs form the
most southwestern tip of Africa, we cruise east along
the scenic Garden Route.

Along the way, we’ll visit renowned wilderness
parks, including the Addo Elephant National Park; the
private Kariega Game Reserve, with its abundant wildlife
and marvelous setting; the expansive thorn tree woodland
of Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park, home to rare black
rhinos and other animals; and the renowned Garden Route,
one of Africa’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.
We’ll also explore the urban dimension of the
country, including, in addition to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth,
East London and the colorful, cosmopolitan city of Durban.
We have put together a wonderful team of lecturers who
will explore the country’s various themes with
you. Accompanying you on your journey will be Walt Pomeroy,
an expert in ornithology, natural history and environmental
advocacy, and Lyn Mair, an experienced naturalist who
is a resident of Cape Town.
You may ask, why visit South Africa by cruise instead
of a land tour? The reasons are as various as the splendor
of the landscape. With many of South Africa’s
attractions located on or near the long and beautiful
coastline, a cruise is the ideal way to explore the
country. Once you settle into your spacious Corinthian
II suite, you will travel in comfort. You won’t
have to pack your suitcase again until the end of the
journey.
Don’t miss this chance to discover South Africa
by Sea, and explore some of the world’s most spectacular
coastlines, impressive wildlife and diverse cultures.
