SARDINIA
FOR PLANT ENTHUSIASTS
April
17-29, 2009
The
second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia
is almost a country on its own. This is a fine opportunity
to sample its cultural and natural diversity in the
company of Italy-based naturalist and linguist Mark
Walters.

Our
visit is timed to coincide with the peaks of spring
flowering and bird migration. We start in the atmospheric
town of Alghero with its heady blend of Catalan and
Italian heritage, making daytime excursions out into
the wild northwest of the island. From our second base
at Santa Teresa di Gallura we tour some fascinating
prehistoric remains – the Nuraghe culture –
in the granitic north-east of the island. At sea level
on the west coast our trip includes a visit to the remarkable
site of Tharros, settled by the Phoenicians and then
Romans in the first millennium BC. We then head into
the wild interior to the Giara di Gesturi, a bastion-like
basaltic plateau with some of Europe’s last wild
horses. Our journey will culminate in the fascinating
city of Cagliari, littered with remains from its Roman
and medieval past.
