EXPLORING ALASKA'S COASTAL WILDERNESS

June 2-9, 2012 with optional extension to Betchart Denali Extension dates: May 26 - June 1, 2012

Dear AAAS and Sigma Xi Members and Friends,

Alaska is America’s greatest wilderness — a place about which the word untrammeled can still be used, where vast stretches lie between communities that remain deliberately roadless. Join us aboard the 62-guest National Geographic Sea Lion, June 2-9, 2012, and embark on an expedition through the Inside Passage and into the Alaska of legend — a land of humpback whales, brown bears, soaring bald eagles, thundering glaciers, pristine islands and dramatic fjords.

National Geographic Sea Lion is the ideal ship to sail these waters. Her shallow draft allows us to venture into narrow canals where humpback whales come to feed. And her expansive deck space accommodates all guests comfortably at once, so we can stand together to watch bears forage on shore and seals swim alongside us. Zodiac landing craft and kayaks enable you to observe glaciers up close and land on remote islands. The ship is also equipped with tools to explore below the surface: a hydrophone lets you eavesdrop on the live vocalizations of whales, and a video microscope transmits images to monitors in the ship’s Lounge, allowing you to view a largely unnoticed world.

With a superb staff of five onboard naturalists, you’ll never be far from a top expert who can share their insights in fields as varied as your interests — biology, botany, history and photography. And because our style of exploring is casual yet engaged, you’re encouraged to gravitate towards whichever expert’s interests mirror your own when we break into small groups to cruise among icebergs in Zodiacs or hike Alaska’s temperate rain forests.

Exploring with a group of like-minded travelers interested in adventure and discovery is an exhilarating experience. And the shared experience of life aboard an intimate ship is unlike anything else. I hope you’ll join us to discover
the expedition spirit in the wilds of Alaska. To make your reservation, please return the enclosed reservation form or call 800-252-4910.

Sincerely,

Margaret M. Betchart
